Martin Duckworth, Director of Photography
Martin Duckworth studied at Yale and at the University of Toronto and worked as a teacher before joining the National Film Board of Canada in 1963 as an assistant cameraman. By 1965, he had become a staff cameraman at this celebrated institution where he remained until 1970. Since then Martin has directed some 30 independent documentaries, most of which he also shot. He has acted as DOP on another 70 or so films, working with a wide array of distinguished Canadian and international directors.
Martin’s work has been recognized through a number of awards and he himself has been honoured, including being named « Artist for Peace » in 2002, and « Industry Eco Hero » at the 2006 Planet in Focus Film Festival. He is a committed activist, working tirelessly on behalf of peace and human rights, both through his films and as an individual. He has been on the boards of numerous film and community organizations, has been the subject of biographical articles and retrospectives and was until 2006, Distinguished Part-time Professor at the Mel Hoppenheim School of Cinema in Montreal.
He is the father of 7 children and 10 grand-children, and cites as his greatest influences : Serge Rachmaninoff, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Tommy Douglas, Gilles Groulx, and Jean-Paul Riopelle.
